Millennials increase savings but fall short of target
rate
The American Population is starting to save more slowly but
surely. People have begun saving enough
to pay off most of the expenses that they would have after retirement. The millennials, people who are about 25 to
34 years of age, are the age group that had the biggest jump in their savings
rate.
Problem: Despite the jump in savings from millennials, they
will still have to double their savings rates in order to sustain themselves
after retirement. Millennials are on
their way to obtaining the optimal savings rate but have a long road to go.
Apartment demand proves costly
Many people in the United States are having issues paying
for their rent. There has been talk
about maybe providing an incentive for home owners so that they rent their
apartments out to potential renters for less money. The government would pay the home owners part
of the rent so that the owner would be getting paid fair market value.
Problem: There are many people struggling to pay rent in the
US right now because apartment costs have risen. There are many people that are paying more
than 50% of the money that they are making to pay for housing. People in Florida, Hawaii, and California are
struggling with their payments the most.
Virtual charter schools in danger of closing
Two south Florida charter schools may be closing at the end
of the academic year. The schools both
have a grade of D. The schools have been
under pressure because of how many students are failing their final exams. The schools will probably end up getting the
option on whether they want to stay open or if they want to voluntarily shut
down.
Problem: The schools
failed to show that they required enough reading during class time, did not
have a comprehensive grading system, and failed to provide provisions needed by
students with disabilities and students that speak limited English.
'Superbugs' face new team in medical battle - Drugmakers,
governments to join in fight
Drugmakers, testing groups, and industry groups have begun working
together to develop and distribute drugs that will kill drug-resistant
viruses. 16 countries have joined in on
the fight and hope to develop drugs that are affordable and effective on
killing these ‘Superbugs”.
Problem: People
cannot afford many of the drugs today that would kill off the virus that they
have. The viruses are becoming
drug-resistant because people are not taking their full prescriptions so the
viruses end up adapting to the drugs. If
this problem is not corrected, it is estimated that 10 million people will die
annually starting in 2050.
Jury finds man guilty of $56M Medicare fraud
Khaled Elbeblawy has been recently convicted of getting 40
million dollars of fraudulent funds from the Medicare program. He had been bribing doctors and staffing
companies. Elbeblawy had patients go in
and pretend to have diabetes and other conditions so that the company could get
money for insulin injections, physical therapy, and nursing care.
Problem: Since many
companies have been doing these fraudulent acts, Medicare has been forced to
cut down on the large sums of money that they have been giving to diabetics for
insulin and what not.
What's up Jonathan? My name is Gabe and I really liked what you wrote on this post. The most intriguing one for me was the man who is guilty of the 56 million medicare fraud. This truly bothers me because it worries me that others may be doing this and getting away with it. Obviousl yhti s was no the case here but it is a problem that affects the live of the diabetics because money for them will be cut down and in the end of the day can be a huge problem for their health. The Charter schools closing down also interested me a whole ton because I am from down south and I believe in many of these charter schools. I have friends that went to some and are very successful so to see that these programs are not working is a scary thought that could affect us all in the future. ReplyDeleteThe stories you found were very interesting, some of them went hand in hand with some of the worlds biggest problems. Issues with medicare for instance. I think you found stories that have big entrepreneurial opportunities for improvement, so good job! I think the charter school one was the most interesting, these schools could be improved immensely.
