Final Reflection

1)  As I read through my blog, I realized that most of the experiences that I had this semester were good ones.  Giving away the dollar was probably my highlight of the year because I did not realize how hard it would be to give away free money!  The most interesting point was my interview with a successful entrepreneur.  I learned a lot from this experience and I will never forget it.

2) The experience that will stick with me for years was the interview with an entrepreneur.  I was given very good advice on both being an entrepreneur and life.  I will never forget the information that I acquired through that experience.  I am most proud of myself for actually coming up with my business idea.  I've never sat down and really brainstormed like this before and I think it will really come to help me in the future.

3) I think that I definitely have moved closer to an entrepreneurial mindset.  At the beginning of the semester I wasn't even completely sure what an entrepreneur was.  Now I not only know what an entrepreneur is, but I also know how to be a successful one.  I have created my idea and I have gotten feedback on it.  Now I have the courage to go ahead and get started on my project.

4) The one recommendation I would give to students who will be taking this course in the future would be to stay organized with your assignments.  In order to succeed in this course, just make sure that you are completing the assignments early and putting effort into it.  In order to foster that mindset, just take a step back and realize the amount that you can get out of the course.  You are only going to get something out of this course if you give effort.

Elevator Pitch No. 4

I did not get back any feedback that could be constructive for my video.  Everybody seemed to think that I was a good speaker and had very good body language.  I stayed consistent and gave a pitch that was pretty much the same.  I hope that one day my product will be on the market and you will all receive the benefits from it.

Venture Concept No. 2

Opportunity
·         As society is moving quickly towards a completely technological lifestyle, people are purchasing more electronic communication products.  These products need to be charged to be usable
·         My market would mostly be sold to colleges and high schools.  One day I hope that my product will also be found in public libraries, airports, and restaurants.
·         My customers are currently satisfying their need of charging their electronic devices with either stock or store-bought chargers.  My customers are not going to loyal to these products because my product will make their lives much easier.
·         This opportunity is huge.  There are so many people that could heavily benefit by using my product.
·         My window of opportunity will probably run out within the next five years.  There are a few companies that are currently researching this area so I would have to get the technology started as soon as possible.
Innovation
My innovation is called the Magnetable.  My product, in short, is pretty much a table that charges your electronics.  All my customers would have to do is place their electronic devices on the table and they would begin charging immediately.  The table is water proof and would only need one outlet to plug into and then it would serve as a wireless charger for all electronics.  Each Magnetable would cost $5000 before taxes and I am very confident that they would sell for that price because I would be selling them to big companies and colleges.
Venture Concept
·         The reasons that customers would want to switch to my product is because it would make their lives so much easier, which is why I believe that it would not be hard to convince my customers to use my product.
·         My competitors would be any company that has electronic products that would need to be plugged in.  The weaknesses of my competitors would be that people forget their chargers all the time and chargers also break very often.
·         Distribution would be very easy because most of my customers would be buying these tables in bulk because they would be providing the Magnetables for all of their customers.  The price of these Magnetables is relatively cheap for the service that it provides so I believe that it would not be very hard to convince larger businesses to buy my product.
·         I would have to hire a few engineers to design the table.  After that, I would hire about ten salesman to go sell the product.  Being the CEO of the company, I would be managing the company funds and allocating those funds towards product production, materials, and employee saleries
Minor Elements
1.       My “Secret Sauce” is that I am extremely personable and easy to talk to.  I feel very confident that I can pull anybody off the side of the street and convince them that my product is the best product in the world right now.  I feel that convincing large companies to buy my product would be even easier than pulling people off the side of the street.
2.       The next big product that I would start producing would be a portable universal charger for most electronics.  The charger would magnetically attach to your electronic device and begin to charge it upon contact.
3.       In five years, I want to have my product in every large university in the nation.  In ten years, I want to be recognized by larger businesses as a successful entrepreneur so that it would be easier to convince them to buy my products.  This venture will help me get to where I want to be because I believe that the product is a very brilliant idea and will become very successful throughout the world.

The only feedback that I received was that my idea was a great one and that my customers cannot wait for my product to be out in the market.  One person did ask if my Magnetable was waterproof.  I stated that my product was, in fact, waterproof.  This was the only change that I made to my venture concept.

Week 14 Reading Reflection

1) One thing that surprised me was that companies are constantly bootlegging ideas on their free time.  I would not think that people are constantly taking their work home with them instead of enjoying their free time off from work.

2)  One thing that confused me was that the author said that for an emerging business opportunity, you should be thinking really big but be starting small.  It makes more sense to think small and start small and then once things start to come together, start thinking big.

3)  One question that I would ask the author would be is "At what point should an entrepreneur think about terminating a project?" I am just curious about what point an entrepreneur should shut down a project when the project is failing.
Another question I would ask the author is "At what point should a successful business begin thinking about starting up new projects?"  I am unsure about when one project is stable and successful enough to begin thinking about new opportunities.

4)  One thing that I do not agree with the author about is that you should be giving rewards based on results.  I do not think that this is a good way to go about getting things done.  What if the business starts to go through some difficulties?  In this case people would not be as motivated to get work done and the business will probably fail.

Google Gold

1.   One thing that I did to achieve SEO were sharing the links to my blog posts on other peoples' blogs when I left comments on them.  By doing this, there are many more connections to my blog giving me a higher SEO.

2.  Some keywords that I searched were Kigel, blog, blogger, and entrepreneurship.  I selected these keywords by thinking what words would be connected to all of my blog posts.  All of these words would be associated with my blog so that is why I typed the into the google search bar.

3.  I did not use much social media to share my blog this semester but I record a few videos for youtube.  I feel like social media can be used as a great tool for getting people to read your blog.  By posting your blog on facebook once or twice a month, your blog followers will probably increase exponentially.

4.  Idea Napkin No. 1 was my most viral post this semester.  I think that this was my most viral post because more people were assigned to comment on this post than usual and people had to refer back to this post if they wanted to get a better idea of what my product was when they were assigned to read my Venture Concept No. 1 post.

5.  I did not make it onto the first page of my google search but I did appear on the third page.

Very Short Interview, Part 2

When looking back at the questions that I asked Daniel Cane, one of the founders of Blackboard LLC, I think that I've come a long way.  I really learned from the questions and applied the answers that I was given to this course.

Three Questions:

1) At what point did you decide that it was best to sell your first business?

My competitor decided to pay me a sum of money that was much more than my product was worth.  I decided that the money that I would gain from selling Blackboard could be used to start up many new projects.

2) Did you decide to try to start up any new businesses?  If so, how many attempts did it take to create a new successful product?

I did try to start up a new business shortly after I sold Blackboard.  I actually tried more than ten times to invent another successful product.  I was actually close to giving up but I stayed persistent and finally designed a winner.

3) If you could give one piece of advice to a up and coming entrepreneur, what would you tell them?

Don't let anybody tell you that you can't do something.  I've seen many of my peers overcome much more adversity that me and still succeed.  Being successful is a mindset.  Even mistakes are successes.  From every mistake I have made, I have learned something new about being an entrepreneur and the industry I was in.

I have come a long way in this class.  I knew almost nothing about being an entrepreneur when I signed up, but now I feel like I have general knowledge about all aspects of being an entrepreneur.  Because of this, I felt much more comfortable taking to Daniel about his businesses.  Daniel actually did make a comment on how much knowledge I had acquired since the last time I had seen him.  He told me to keep up the good work.

Week 13 Reading Reflection

One thing that surprised me in the chapter was that the author stated that a question that should be asked when acquiring a company is "Will the previous owner be competing in the same industry?"  I didn't think that people would sell a business in a certain industry and buy another one in the same exact market.  It doesn't quite make sense to me.

One thing that confused me in the chapter is when the author said that one reason for acquisition is reducing fixed costs by acquiring a firm that will permit elimination of duplicate fixed costs.  I 'm not really sure what that means.

One question I would ask the author is "What is the first thing that an interested buyer should look for in a company when thinking about acquiring it?"  I'm just curious what the most important aspect I should be looking for when looking into buying a company.

Another question I would ask the author is "Would it be more ideal as a buyer to begin negotiating with a reasonable price or low ball the person?"  I'm just curious if owner's would view a low ball price as an insult or view you as more of a business man.

On thing that I did not agree with the author about was that buyers are willing to pay more than the evaluated price for a company to avoid start up costs.  I'm not so sure that this is true.  I feel like people enjoy developing their own business from scratch and the pleasure that they receive from being successful.  I feel that the only people who would buy a company for a higher price would be the top 1%.

Celebrating Failure

I failed at getting straight A's this semester.  I really needed to pull up my GPA this semester but it doesn't seem feasible at this point.

What I learned from this experience is that I have a lot of room for improvement.  I worked a lot this semester so my grades suffered a little bit, but I could have definitely used more of my down time for study time.  Another thing that I learned from this failure is that my life is not going to dictated by the grades that I get.  I have met many people and made many connections this semester and each of those connections is much more important that the grades that I get every semester.

I handle failure by turning it into something positive.  As Benjamin Franklin once said "I didn't fail the test, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong".  If you look at every mistake as a good learning experience, you can never get upset.  I have learned from many of my experiences in college, good and bad, and I have never made the same mistake twice.  This class has taught me that you may fail many times, but through those failures you will figure out where you went wrong.  Through doing this you will become a better business man and a better person.

My Exit Strategy

I intend on selling my business in five years for a large return because the technology business is a very hard one to stay in.  People are constantly developing new technology which means that it would be very hard to stay on top.
My exit strategy did not change most of my decisions that I've made for my concept.  My business was intended to exponentially grow until a certain point and then top off because that is what happens to most technology companies that only have one popular product.  My business will probably flourish for a couple years and be out of commission afterwards.

Amazon Whisperer

Revenue Drivers:  Selling Magnetables to universities, libraries, and perhaps airports

Next Product:  The next product my customers would want would probably be some sort of app that allows users to send certain information to others while both devices are placed on top of a Magnetable.

New Product Benefits: This could make it easier to send larger items almost instantaneously from phone to laptop or phone to phone.  This app could also be used to send contact information very quickly.

Similar Products:  There are no products like this only because the Magnetable has not been invented yet so any product invented afterwards is impossible to exist yet.

Customer Review: N/A

What I would change:  I would make it so the Magnetable would not only charge your electronic devices but so that they can also exchange information with other devices laying on the Magnetable

Why this would be beneficial: This would be beneficial because it would allow people to exchange contact information, large files, and miscellaneous data items by just placing both devices on the table.

My Unfair Advantage

1) Reliability - Many companies are not reliable and try to scam you into getting even more than your money and I would never do that
2) I am very personable - I am very easy to talk to which is something that definitely sets me apart from others.  I can talk to anyone anywhere about anything which is something that I feel many cannot do.
3) Connections to high-end engineering companies - My dad deals with engineering companies all day which would make it very easy for me to find someone to design my product.
4) Connections to the University of Florida - I currently go to University of Florida and know many people that work here in all sorts of departments.  This would allow for me to more easily sell my product to the university.
5) Knowledge of common problems college students experience - I have personally experienced many of the problems that I am trying to correct for college students.  This makes it much easier for me to develop a very quality design for my product.
6) I am very thorough when undergoing a project so there are no mistakes - I feel that many companies would try to rush their product into the market.  I would make sure that the product would be free of any complications and would be of high quality before being sent into the market.
7) My family has connections to various types of companies in Palm Beach County - This could possibly help my product be distributed into different types of companies such as restaurants, libraries, and public schools.  I feel that I am much more connected in that area than most others.
8) My family has connections to many politicians that are currently in office - My mom used to work with politicians on a daily basis as a lobbyist.  She still has those phone numbers which could significantly help me with getting the word out on my product.
9) I am very good at thinking on my feet, especially in emergency situations - I feel that many people fail when an emergency occurs and have no idea on how to make a plan and get themselves out of that situation.  I am very good at this which is why I would prevail better than others.
10) I am a very good manager - Many people do not know how to lead but I am very good at that.  I lead by example which is why many people have trust in me and allows the group I am leading to strive for the top.

I think that my personability is top resource.  I make connections every single day by just talking to random people on the streets.  I develop trust with people much faster than most others.  I feel that I can convince you that I am a great worker and person within 5 minutes of talking to you which would make it much easier for me to conduct business.

Elevator Pitch No. 3

The feedback that I got from Elevator Pitch No. 2 was that I was a very good speaker and my personality made people interested in my product as soon as I started talking.  One person said that my pitch should be a little longer and one person said that my pitch was the perfect length so I decided to keep it about the time frame.  One thing that I was told to change was my clothes.  This time I decided to throw on a button down shirt instead of a t-shirt in order to seem more professional.

My Secret Sauce

Five things that make me different from everybody else
1) I am very diligent.  If somebody asks me to do something and I tell them that it will be done, I will get it done no matter what it takes.
2) I am intelligent.  I like to learn about the world and everything that it has to hold for me.
3) I am a very good friend.  Whenever my friends need me, I am there for them.  If they are in trouble, it only takes one call or text to get me there.
4) I think outside of the box.  When it comes to solving a complicated problem or simple one, I can usually find a way to fix it.
5) I am very good at performing under pressure.  Whether it's an emergency situation or just speaking in front of others, I perform at my best.

My friend Jason stated that I am always there when he needs me and he can depend on me to get things done.  He also said I don't complain about things that I am asked to do.

My friend Andrew said that I am very intuitive.  He also stated that my organizational skills are very good and I plan everything out before I actually do it.
My friend Lucas said that I am a very driven person.  He also said that I assert myself in a leadership position when needed and I am always up for a challenge.
My friend Marco said that I am innovative and come up with new ideas.  He also stated that I am open-minded and open to new experiences.
My friend Chris said that I am very outgoing and organized.  He also said that I am very hardworking and not afraid to get involved with different organizations.

It seems that I see myself almost identically to how my best friends see me.  My friends described me as hardworking, intuitive, and dependable which is exactly how I would describe myself.  One difference in how I see myself and how my friends see me is that a couple of them said that I was very organized which is definitely not something I see in myself.  This difference is probably caused by the fact that they only hear about the grades that I get in school rather than how I got that grade.  I tend to cram for tests rather than studying for them in an organized fashion.  I think the friends that I interviewed were correct on all of my attributes except for being organized.  One thing that I would probably add to my list is being outgoing.  I am a very outgoing person and thoroughly enjoy meeting new people.

Week 9 Reading Reflection

I was a little surprised to find out that great entrepreneurs live in fear of becoming preempted in the market.  I thought that all great entrepreneurs would be very confident in their business, while still striving to become even better.  I was surprised that the fear of being replaced was considered to be a good characteristic.

I was a little confused about what secondary data was.  Is it just data that has already been collected by a research company or is it data that a company has acquired itself?

One question I would ask the author is "Is the internet the best form of marketing?"  I was just curious if most marketing money should be invested in internet ads or somewhere else such as newspapers and billboards.
Another question I would ask the author is "Does the money spent on marketing change as the product becomes more successful?"  I was just curious if as the product generates more profits, should more money or less money go into advertising for it?

I think that the author was wrong about the definition of market.  The definition states that a market is a group of consumers with purchasing power and unsatisfied needs.  I don't believe that really nice clothes are needs.  They are wants, but there is still a market for it.  My only problem with the definition is the part that talks about the consumer having unsatisfied needs because without needs, there can still be a market for the product.

Idea Napkin No. 2

My name is Jonathan Kigel.  Some of my talents are that am I am good at playing sports and that I am very good at playing video games.  Some of my skills are that I am very good at talking to people, I am pretty good at thinking outside of the box, and I am good at thinking on feet.  I have worked in several different professional environments such as hospitals and research labs with teachers and graduate students.  Some of my aspirations are that I hope to be a successful business man by selling a product that is feasible and useful to my customers.  I can see this business becoming my priority in life which means that I will have to put a lot of time into it.  I hope that it will thrive and flourish.

My product is called the Magnetable.  You would literally just place your phone or laptop on a table and the table would begin to charge these items immediately without any chargers.  Every table in the area would be a Magnetable for customer convenience.

My customers would primarily be students at various universities around the country.  These Magnetables would be placed in libraries so that students would not have any trouble finding an open outlet or have to return home early because they forgot one of their chargers.  Also, my idea could be utilized in airports.

Customers would pay money to use my product because it would save them a lot of time and energy.  Time is everything nowadays and customers do not want to waste it for no reason.  My customers would be very happy because of the convenience of my product.  Also, my product could be used in airports because many people in airports are in need in chargers while they are waiting for their flights and airports are notorious for not having enough charging ports.

Customers would pay money to use my product because it would save them a lot of time and energy.  Time is everything nowadays and customers do not want to waste it for no reason.  My customers would be very happy because of the convenience of my product.

I am extremely personable and friendly which makes me very easy to talk to.  I do not press my ideas in your face and pressure you like some business man.  I earn people’s trust and then I convince them why they should believe in me and my product.

I think that all five elements fit together for my product.  It is a very good idea and could definitely be put into use in the real world.  I am very good at selling my idea to others and my product would be very useful so I would expect it to sell itself without me even talking that much.

I only had two relevant feedback comments about my idea napkin.  The first feedback comment was asking if the Magnetable would be located on every table or if it was going to be located on only a couple tables.  I stated that the Magnetable technology would be located on every table in the area.  The other feedback comment that I got was that I should also think about selling Magnetables to airports because people in airports are often waiting for the flights and need to charge their electronics.  Also, there are not enough plugs in airports.  I stated these ideas in my sections about who would be using my product and why they would want to use my product.

Week 8 Reading Reflection

I was surprised that some entrepreneurs invest up to one hundred thousand dollars in their own company.  That is a crazy amount of money and I'm not sure where an entrepreneur would have that much money to start up a business.

I was a little confused at what equity financing was.  I wasn't sure if equity financing was when the owner sold portions of his/her company to the bank to get out of debt or if the owner was exchanging stock is his own company for stock in another company.

A couple questions I would want to ask the author would be "With respect to money, is it a better idea to create your own company or invest your money in to another person's company?"  It seems like there are tons of costs to take into account when you are starting up a company and you may not profit for some time while on the other hand, I could just invest in another company and begin making profits right away.  My other question would be "What is the best way to pay off debt to the bank?"  I'm not sure if it would be better to pay off the bank monthly with interest included or just sacrifice one of my possessions to the bank in order to pay off the debt.

I don't really agree with the author that you would need 500K to 3 million dollars from an "angel" to pay for an up and coming business.  I believe that companies can make it through years of hard work and do not need "lucky money" from anybody.

Halfway Reflection

1) I have kept myself very organized so that I know when all of my assignments are due.  I have also been proactive in going out and taking the video recordings that are required for this course.  Also, I have been communicating with other classmates so that I make sure that I am meeting all of the requirements for the assignments for the class.

2) One moment that I felt like giving up was when I had two exams in one day and I still had to do two assignments for this class.  I pulled through by just staying diligent with my work.  This helped my complete the assignments.  I feel like I have developed somewhat of a more tenacious attitude over the past two months.  There is no specific experience that helped me develop this tenacious attitude, but the amount of assignments that have been given kind of force you to become more tenacious because you have to keep up with all of it and not get behind.

3) Three tips I would give to students taking this class next semester would be to do your work earlier than the due date, make sure you take your videos before the weekend because it is harder to find people to interview on the weekend, and stay organized so that you do not forget when your assignments are due.

Free Money

I will stand right outside of my house, which is near midtown, and start giving away the dollar bills.  I will try to approach males that are college students.  To get the conversation started all I am going to do is simply ask them how their day is going.  My plan for the conversation is to tell the person that somebody had given me a dollar today and I just wanted to pay it forward.  I think that I can successfully give away 5 out of 5 dollar bills.

To be honest, I didn't really think that this exercise had anything to do with this class but I didn't seem to have any issues completing it.  Giving away a dollar was easier than I imagined because I originally thought that people would think it was a weird thing to do.  My predictions were correct.  I made the assumption that people wouldn't want to talk to me and I would really have to sell my idea, but I really didn't have an issue giving away the dollar bills to any of the people I talked to.

Elevator Pitch No. 2

The feedback that I got back from Elevator Pitch No. 1 was that my product was a great idea and that my pitch was very good.  I didn't get any "silly" feedback from anybody.
I didn't really change much about my pitch because everybody seemed to think that it was pretty good.  The only thing I really changed was some of the wording in my pitch.

Week 6 Reading Reflection

I was surprised that substitutes, items that are bought used rather than new, were such a big problem for corporations.  I thought that through the advancement in the technology of the company's product, the company would easily be able to sell their new products to their new customers.

I was a little confused when the author said that advanced technology is not enough to attract customers to the company's product.  I thought that the more advanced the technology, the more attractive the product would be to customers.  When I see a commercial on TV about a product that is "futuristic" per say, I want to buy that product more than I would want to buy a product that is on the same technological level as everybody else.

I would want to ask the author "Is it necessary for every company to have a lobbyist to communicate and help change policies in government?"  I'm just curious if paying a lobbyist to get policies changed in the area of the product is always necessary no matter what field the product is in.

I would also want to ask the author "What is the best method of stimulating interest in the company's new products and making them more attractive then the company's much cheaper substitutes?"  It seems that substitutes are a big problem for larger companies nowadays.  I was just curious how a company can get its customers to buy their new products when there are so many of it's old products out in the market that are already very functional.

I don't agree with the author that if the item is perishable, it's cost is going to decrease.  Fruits and vegetables are some of the most perishable products in the market but they are still relatively expensive versus other products in the grocery store.  I don't think that an item being perishable will affect the price at all.

Interviewing Customers No. 3

The questions that I am going to ask my customers are "What problems did you have the last time you went to the library?", " Do you think that my product could help solve some of those problems?", and "Could you see my product being implemented in college libraries around the country?"

I learned that many UF students have the same problems while they are at the library.  Most of these students go to Marston to study and have issues finding an open table near a power outlet.  I was surprised that the customers all liked my idea and didn't seem to find any problems with it.  I expect that my idea will get a little more attention and might even become reality as a result of these interviews.

My product is called the Magnetable.  You would literally just place your phone or laptop on a table and the table would begin to charge these items immediately without any chargers.

My customers would primarily be students at various universities around the country.  These Magnetables would be placed in libraries so that students would not have any trouble finding an open outlet or have to return home early because they forgot one of their chargers.
